Introduction

The purpose of this blog, as the title would suggest, is to chronicle my foray into web development. A little background on myself... I am a former software engineer, I developed Windows applications using MFC/C++ for about 10 years, and also during my last year as a software engineer developed a web application using J2EE, I've tried to block out that experience as much as possible... :) I quit software engineering because I couldn't take endless meetings and politics at my company, and I became a real estate developer. As a real estate developer I found the need for some web applications, and after three years away from programming I find myself, for better or worse, doing it again. This time I can do it on my own terms and have fun with it, so hopefully it should be more enjoyable. My first application, one that will be very useful for my business, is a real estate auction web site. I've decided that I want to use Linux & MySQL, and the best options for that combination, based on my research, are Ruby on Rails and PHP. Stay tuned...

just a small comment about "I quit programming because of endless meetings and politics at my company".

Do you make more money in your current job? cause you can easily quit a job where there is too much politics for another one which is presumably better...

I love programming; this is what I love to do; I could as well do other jobs, however programming remains the priority.

Politics? Too many meetings? Workopolis and monster are a click away...

Yes I do make more luckily. But I would take less money to rid of that life. I went into programming to program, but unfortunately spent more time managing my boss than I did actually doing my work. The problem in most corporations is that middle management has convinced itself that meeting are actual work. Most meetings that involve middle management accomplish nothing unfortunately, only meetings with my fellow engineers were actually worthwhile.

I'm sorry to hear that you gave up your programming life. But the problem was "endless meetings and politics", i think it was just because of no clear layering of people role.

Meetings and politics are clearly not a developer's thing. Not even in engineer's diet. Had you have a functional system analysts and project managers, I believe you could cut much of those bad diet. Yes, meetings and politics are such ill, bad-tasting diets for us in IT business.
